Dixie and the Reich

Dixie and the Reich:
A sort of ATL based on the film CSA Confederate States of America. Like the movie the CSA manages to overcome the Union and annex nearly all of the North and reintroduce mass slavery, Christian social traditionalism and a new Manifest Destiny based on white supremacy. The Late 19th Century is characterised with the rapid and successful conquest and subjugation of Latin America through divide and conquest strategies. The beginning of the 20th Century is a period of isolation for the CSA as they work to digest and exploit their new colonial territories and satellites. However in 1914 a terrible war breaks out in Europe and changes everything.

In the CSA a massive economic Crash takes place in 1929. An attempted reintroduction of the Slave Trade does partially reinvigorate the Confederate economy but intervention by the colonial powers of Europe confines their trading to Liberia. The event that changes the world takes place in 1933 with the rise of the Nazi Party within the German Weimar Republic. Under the leader of the charismatic sociopath Adolph Hitler Germany is transformed into a fascist dictatorship known as the Third Reich and blatantly disregards the Treaty of Versailles through rearmament and territorial expansion.

Fairly good relations are created between the CSA and the Reich with the Fuhrer conducting several visits to the CSA where he observed the slave based economy and culture of the CSA. Whilst the CSA denounces Hitler's plans for the extermination of the 'lesser races' (enslaving them is far more ethically efficient), they agree to remain neutral in the upcoming war that Hitler planned. Instead the CSA shifts its collective focus away from Europe and towards the Pacific where the Japanese Empire was expanding and threatening a region that the CSA claimed as their sphere of influence.

However in this time-line things do go differently. With the fall of France, Britain finds itself stuck more-or-less alone standing against the Nazis. The Nazis engage in Operation Barbarossa in 1941 but do so with better organization and manage to capture the Caucasus. Deprived of the close fuel source and facing a Nazi army using said oil at the same time, the USSR falls back. Stalin is killed in 1943 when his armoured train is hit en-route to the provisional capital in Omsk and the USSR is thrown into further distress. Soon the USSR is forced back to the Urals where they are able to reorganise. Meanwhile the British do succeed in keeping the Nazis on the other side of the Channel and successfully force the Axis forces out of Africa. However an invasion of Europe was still impossible, especially after forces that had been concentrated in Russia returned to Europe after the Ural Line had been created and reinforced.

The war in the Pacific went very differently. Japan had been preparing to attack the European colonies in the West Pacific much like OTL. However in 1941 the CSA suddenly attacked, bombing several key Japanese naval bases as well as the city of Kyoto. The CSA attacked the Japanese with the ferocity of zealous racists but found themselves shocked by the brutal tenacity and cultural fanaticism of the Japanese Imperial forces. CSA units slowly forced their way across the Pacific through strength of numbers alone but the losses were soon becoming intolerable, even when slave units were formed and sent into the worst combat zones. In 1945 the CSA ended the war in their favour with the creation and successful detonation of their atomic bomb. Japan surrendered and ceded their territorial influence to the CSA but thankfully remained independence. An alliance with the British and Russians who had their own atomic weapons in 1947 saved Japan from any further concessions to the CSA.

The CSA today is the third largest economy in the world. Despite aggressive capitalism and the resources of their empire, the focus on agriculture and the inherent inefficiency in a slave economy have worked against the CSA. The CSA still focuses on their manufacturing industries which continue to exploit slaves as the basic labour force. However as mechanisation takes over physical labour many businesses have been left with thousands of redundant slaves that have saturated the online market and lowered their net value. Confederate culture is stagnant and repressed with most of it being a simple extension of government propaganda. The CSA government has centralised since their early days with a vast military complex, an extensive state propaganda machine and an omnipresent secret police and surveillance system all of which work to keep the social order of the CSA in place. Religion is an important part of the CSA with the focus divided between the various accepted Christian denomination. Long Island is still a reservation for the Jewish population but many have emigrated to New Zion since WWII.

Life for the coloured races in the CSA is very harsh with every single one eligible for slavery. Mandatory genetic tests are performed in order to uncover any 'race faking'. Slaves in Confederate cities are consigned to vast manufactured ghettos where the bare minimum of provisions are given to them and curfews exist and are enforced by military units. On the other hand the white population live very different lives. Confederate citizens are supported by the state to avoid social poverty. They are also provided numerous social supports as well as the best forms of education and opportunity. Women in the CSA are expected to perform the traditional roles of wife, home-maker and mother and pro-natal policies are enforced to ensure that the white population doesn't decline. Religion is an important part of Confederate life with traditional views on religion existing across the country along with numerous efforts to convert or shun any non-Christians within the CSA (barring the Jews). Every citizen owns at least one slave in their household.

The Confederacy's closest ally (sort of) is the Third Reich. Nazi Germany has toned itself down somewhat since the heights in insanity that Germany reached in the late 40s but it is still a very authoritarian and racial supremacist state. Fuhrer rule has been curtailed by the army who have gained increasing power in the Reich and its variety of puppet states. The Reich abandoned the atheist/pagan stance of the earlier days and have instead moved towards a Christian stance to placate their Confederate allies and create a cohesion within the Nazi sphere. German is now home to 250,000,000 Germans due to methods ranging from pro-natal laws to rape camps. Germany abandoned extermination methods in 1962 (and dismantled the camps and covered it all up) and have instead moved to the deportation and marginalisation of their 'lesser races'. Nazi Germany has embraced science once again in order to extend their own security and surveillance state whilst embracing a few economic reforms in order to keep their economy afloat.

The Alliance for True Order & Prosperity controls various other states mostly as puppets but with a few genuine allies and political ideologists. However this Alliance is opposed by the Third Entente, a political organization fighting for the preservation of democratic society and liberal morality (by this TL's standards).

The supposed leader of the Entente is the Anglo-French Union. Great Britain united their nation and their empire with the territories still in the control of Free France. Many of their overseas territories in Africa have seen massive influxes of refugees from Europe and South America which has bolstered the colonist populations and helped stabilise their rule somewhat. The Union stands as the model for the rest of the Entente as a successful multi-cultural society as they have enfranchised and enabled their 'coloured subjects'. Despite universal suffrage, social welfare and numerous charity organisations, much of the Union's territories in Africa are still at very low levels of development and the government has enacted several soft 'economic plans' in order to elevate these regions and make them productive and safe. The Union has a fairly large chip on its shoulder concerning the Reich especially the French regions of the Union. South Africa was a very awkward region and at one point was close to abandoning the Union for the Alliance before an arrangement was reached and South Africa was able to transition to a post-racial society.

The Union's closest partner in the Entente is the Russian Socialist Union which evolved from the rump USSR after the war. The USSR's post war government became increasingly democratic and underwent a fairly slow transition from the Communist dictatorship towards the modern socialist democracy. Despite this Russia is still very authoritarian and militant compared to the Anglo-French Union. Russia has elevated its Turkic and Mongolian citizens who are now a prevalent part of society and government alongside the Slavs. Russia has also embraced a sort of pan-Slavic identity since the Reich exterminated or expelled their Slavs. Russia has also seen an enormous religious revival that began in the 1970s and has gone on to make its mark on Russian culture. Russia is the second largest economy in the world and has also been exporting its culture with several cultural theme-parks and countless Russian restaurants existing in numerous major cities across the Entente.

The third power in the Entente is the Republic of India which reached dominion status in 1961 before gaining full independence in 1965. Under British supervision India successfully formed its own government that did not succumb to extremists on either side of the political spectrum and also industrialised and undergone several stages of modernisation to reach their status in the Entente. India has officially abandoned the caste system but it continues to influence the social organisation of modern India. The Empire of Japan is another significant state in the Entente that has the largest economy and GDP in the world. Japan has suffered an even more traumatic war and has embraced much of their traditional culture and exported it as aggressively as OTL. However due to a more liberal attitude Japan has solved their declining population due to a greater openness to immigration, especially from the fascistic states in East Asia.

Technology is at OTL levels of development at most levels with bio-technology at even further levels due to an acceptance of secretly using slaves as test subjects. Due to fallacious racist theories and religious fundamentalism, the CSA and Germany have extreme misunderstandings in medical science and have fallen behind the Entente in every field which is worrying many in their respective governments. There was a space race with the CSA successfully performing a Moon Landing and Walk due to help from German rocket sciences but this was will be beaten by the Entente Mars landing that touched down in December 21st 2012 and should touch back down on Earth very soon.
